In a move that some didn’t expect them to make, the Pirates have optioned RHP Drew Hutchison to AAA Indianapolis.
Last night’s performance against the Boston Red Sox as the final straw for Hutchison and any chance of him making the team. In just 3.2 innings, the right-handed allowed 10 hits and 9 earned runs.
For the spring, Hutchison compiled an ERA of 10.02 and in his last 3 starts, he allowed 27 hits and 21 runs. To say he underperformed and disappointed would be an understatement.
Because of his salary ($2.3 million) and because most insides believed Pirates management started spring training wanting him in the rotation, Hutchison’s demotion is surprising.
However, based off performance, Clint Hurdle and Neal Huntington made the right call because their was no way Hutchison deserved to start the season in Pittsburgh.
With his demotion today and Steven Brault getting sent down last night, the competition for the 5th spot is down to Trevor Williams and Tyler Glasnow.
Based of performance this spring, I’d say Williams deserves to go north to start the season.
