Tonight the Pirates open up an important 3-game series vs. the World Series Champion Chicago Cubs. Actually, these next two weeks of games are important because they’ll be against teams from the NL Central.
The matchup at PNC Park tonight will be right-hander Trevor Williams (3-3, 5.13 ERA) taking on the Cubs Eddie Butler (3-2, 4.03 ERA).
Despite having a record of 30-36, the Pirates find themselves only 5 games back of the first place Milwaukee Brewers (36-32).
The biggest surprise in baseball, along with the Colorado Rockies, has to be the struggles of the Cubs. Following Wednesday’s loss, the Cubs are now under .500 with a record 32-33. Getting them at PNC Park might be a good thing for the Pirates because the Cubs have lost 10 of their past 11 road games. Also, they haven’t won consecutive road games since April 24-25.
Following this three game series with Chicago, the Pirates go on the road for seven games against Milwaukee (4 games) and then a weekend set in St. Louis.
Coming out of these ten games with six wins would be a win for the Pirates as they look to stay in NL Central contention. Despite Milwaukee being in first place, what’s important is how many games the Pirates are behind the Cubs in the loss column.. They might be struggling but I still feel they’re the team to beat in this division. Currently, the Pirates have 36 losses, the Cubs have 33.
Will they be able to close that gap this weekend?
