Welcome to 3 Up, 3 Down: a weekly recap and preview for the Pirates. This post refers to games from June 12-18: a stretch where the Pirates took two of three against the Colorado Rockies (6/12-14) and lost two of three to the Chicago Cubs (6/16-18).
Last night’s 9-5 loss to Chicago is one of those games that could sting and linger for awhile.
The Pirates were three outs away from an impressive come from behind win before the bullpen and in particular Juan Nicasio blew the game.
Blown saves are always tough but last nights included circumstances that have Pirate fans calling for the head of Clint Hurdle.
It has been an interesting four days on the Pirates’ closer front.
On Tuesday night, Tony Watson blew a ninth-inning lead and the Pirates wound up losing to the Orioles at Baltimore.
On Wednesday night, the same scenario played out as Watson blew his fifth save in 15 opportunities, including his third in nine days.
During his pre-game gathering with the media, manager Clint Hurdle dropped a few pieces of interesting information regarding the current roster.
First thing, Hurdle says that Jameson Taillon will return to the starting rotation next week. At this point, no public decision was announced as to who Taillon will replace in the starting five. Barring either Ivan Nova or Gerrit Cole going to the disabled list, the decision will come down to either Tyler Glasnow or Chad Kuhl.
