3 Up, 3 Down: June 12th-June 18th

Welcome to 3 Up, 3 Down: a weekly recap and preview for the Pirates. This post refers to games from June 12-18: a stretch where the Pirates took two of three against the Colorado Rockies (6/12-14) and lost two of three to the Chicago Cubs (6/16-18).

Jameson Taillon returned to the Pirates Monday, going five shutout innings and picking up the win against the Colorado Rockies. While he had a much worse outing against the Cubs Sunday (5 IP, 4 ER), Taillon’s return is a big one for the rotation and team morale. Pirates Talk Now’s John Perrotto wrote about his return Tuesday. The First year Draft was Monday-Wednesday. The Pirates’ top pick was high school right-hander Shane Baz, who has already signed with the team. I recapped all three days of the draft for PTN. Hurdle Getting Questioned for Bullpen Decison

Last night’s 9-5 loss to Chicago is one of those games that could sting and linger for awhile.

The Pirates were three outs away from an impressive come from behind win before the bullpen and in particular Juan Nicasio blew the game.

Blown saves are always tough but last nights included circumstances that have Pirate fans calling for the head of Clint Hurdle.

Hurdle Changes His Mind, Plus News on Taillon

During his pre-game gathering with the media, manager Clint Hurdle dropped a few pieces of interesting information regarding the current roster.

First thing, Hurdle says that Jameson Taillon will return to the starting rotation next week. At this point, no public decision was announced as to who Taillon will replace in the starting five. Barring either Ivan Nova or Gerrit Cole going to the disabled list, the decision will come down to either Tyler Glasnow or Chad Kuhl.

Welcome to 3 Up, 3 Down: a weekly recap and preview for the Pirates. This post refers to  games from May 29-June 4, a stretch where the Pirates lost two out of three at home to the Diamondbacks (5/29-5/31) before taking two out of three on the road against the Mets (6/2-6/4).

Trevor Williams turned in a pair of quality starts this week, going six innings Monday against the Diamondbacks and seven innings Sunday against the Mets, only allowing one run in both outings. He struck out six and walked two in that stretch. If his first start against the Dodgers is excluded, Williams has a 2.83 ERA ever since taking over for Jameson Taillon
